-
- This version fixes ONE small bug from version 1.4.1. It would
- occur under regular, but unusual, conditions when something was

- Here's KopyKat .90, a very useful freeware utility by Scott Silverman.
- KopyKat is a simple Startup Document (Init) which adds a hierarchical menu

- application. (Hypercard is one notable exception.)
-
- The hierarchical menus contain three choices, each of which represents an
- individual clipboard which can be used within a single application or

- copying the sender, subject, and text of a letter to the three different
- clipboards and pasting them separately into my reply.

- MacBreadboard is a TTL Trainer/simulator, and was designed for the

- supply, dip switches, LEDs, 7-segment displays, a buzzer and more.
- MacBreadboard comes with online context sensitive help, and a 50 page user

-
- MacBreadboard runs in black&white, gray-scale and color. (Mac II and Mac IIcx
- require System 7 or 32-bit QuickDraw for color and gray-scale)
-
- In this demo version you cannot save, print, or use more than one chip at

- Subject: [*] Noticias - Newswire reception with HyperCard
-
- Noticias is a HyperCard based system to receive newswires. Noticias is not
- a shrink-wrapped product, has no support or manuals (apart from a simple
- Read Me file), but it does work, and it's FREE :) I am posting Noticias so
- that others may find some use for it, or adapt it to receive more types of
- newswires (I'd love to know about that!).
-
- Noticias may not be sold. All rights are retained by me. However, any person
- or institution may use Noticias to receive newswires if they wish, at no
- cost.
- Noticias may be freely distributed as well. Please note Noticias is an
- unsupported product.
-
- LIMITATIONS
-
- Noticias is capable of receiving data from one newswire at a time, using the
- modem or printer port, or any port compatible with the Communications
- Toolbox.
- Noticias knows how to receive the agencies Reuters and EFE. Since Reuters uses
- the stardard ANPA 1312, it should be relatively easy to adapt the stack to
- receive other wires as well.
-
- Noticias was originally developed in Chile, a Spanish-speaking country, so
- most of its user interface is in Spanish. The HyperTalk code is mostly
- commented in English though.
-
- CONTENTS
-
- The posting contains the stack Noticias, a Read Me file, some demo data to
- simulate the reception of a newswire (if you don't have a parabolic antenna
- on your roof), and the source code to a number of XCMDs that translate ASCII
- character sets and help in parsing messages. They are in MPW 68000 assembly.

- Subject: [*] Z specification language ps font
-
- This is a fairly simple font for the Z specification language.
- It is based on the notation used in Hayes' Specification Case Studies.
- (I know that Spivey would be a better basis, but the font
- pre-dates that.)
-
- I created it myself using Fontographer because I needed it for
- our examinations papers. I am most definitely not a professional
- type designer, so I make few claims about the font.
- However it is adequate for the job. In particular it looks OK on paper;
- on the screen at small sizes glyphs are not always as clear as they might be
- (lack of pixels to play with).
- As I have had several requests for it, I have decided to make it more
- publicly available.
-
- This archive contains two files: Z and Z.bmap.
- Z is the PostScript version and Z.bmap is a bitmap.
- Put Z wherever you put your PostScript font files (e.g. the Extensions
- Folder) and Z.bmap where you put bitmap fonts (e.g. in the System
- file, or in a Suitcase file or whatever).
-
- I hope that you find the font useful. If it has any deficiencies
- (other than aesthetic!) or you have any other comments, please

- When I first started with the Mac I used a three wire connection from Apple
- serial port to Mac serial port. All you need is ground, data in, and data
- out. Reverse the data in/out (null modem). Then run a terminal emulation
- program on each machine. I was running Kermit on both at one time but other
- programs with xmodem etc are easier. You can run the baud rate up pretty
- high.
-
- These days with a GS running system 6 you can mount the Mac disk on the Apple
- GS. Drag to copy.
-
- File format is another problem. Claris should have some translaters for
- AppleWorks etc, but everything I tried was ASCII.

- Sounds familiar; no 3.5 inch drive for the Apple //e (just like me).
- If you can find an Apple 2 with both size drives, then copy to 3.5 inch
- ProDOS disks and AFE will read them. Otherwise, get a copy of Apple 2

- Mac SE/30, System 7.0.1, Tuner 1.1.1, Internal HD40, external APS 105,
- Disk Doubler and no other extensions. Occasionally, an attempt to open a
- folder or copy a file (particularly copying fonts) produces a rapidly
- blinking rectangular doughnut (black-on-white or gray-on-gray rim with
- white center, total ~80x40 pixels) in the center of the screen. This
- appears for 5 seconds, disappears, then reappears for 10 seconds. Afterwards
- the finder operation proceeds, but another operation shortly after this
- will almost invariably result in an eternal wristwatch. The machine is not
- hung, there are occasional short accesses of the internal drive, and
- pressing command-option-escape brings up a "quit the finder?" dialog no
- matter which application the file operation is being performed from. The
- result of this dialog is always a crash. After reboot, the external drive
- usually does not mount until after a second or third reboot. This behavior
- occurs whether the machine is booted from internal HD, external HD, or a
- floppy. After this episode, finder operations will frequently hand as
- described above, and Disk First Aid finds damage on one or more drives. I
- should also mention that the APS is partitioned into three parts with the
- APS (Apollyonics) driver. Repairing with DFA, zapping PRAM, and/or rewriting

-
- The IIsi speaker has a pressure contact with the underside of the
- motherboard. Oxidation seems to form on the speaker contacts and
- cleaning them is the only permanent way to fix the problem. A
- temporary fix is an Fkey that jumps the sound up to the maximum -
- beeps once - then returns the sound level to where you had it set.
- It's at mac.archive.umich.edu as
- mac/system.extensions/fkey/twosisoundfix1.0.sit.hqx
-
- To clean the contacts, first remove the top by lifting the tabs at the
- back corners and pulling the top straight up. Touch the power supply
- (the big silver thing at the rear right of the box) to discharge any
- static electricity. Next, remove the hard disk by carefully pulling
- back the two plastic clips on the sides that hold it in place. There's
- no need to unplug the disk. The speaker faces downward and the
- contacts slip under the mother board. It is held in place by four
- plastic clips. Squeeze the clips to release the speaker. Remove the
- speaker by pulling it towards the front of the box. Clean the
- contacts with a pencil eraser or a small file <gently>. Carefully
- bend the contacts upwards for better contact with the motherboard.
- Slip the speaker contacts back under the motherboard and push down
- gently to get the speaker back under the four plastic clips. Replace
- the hard disk. It should snap into place. I did this about 10 months
- ago and haven't had any problems since.

-
- MacTCP 1.1 has problems running on most 8Mhz machines (Plus, SE, Classic) for
- a rather basic reason--they're too slow to handle the overhead required to
- run MacTCP. (The reason is a bit more technical, but that's what it boils
- down to.)
-
- The MacTCP 1.1+ Tool modifies MacTCP to operate a little more efficiently and
- is usually all you need to get MacTCP running on your Plus. This solution is
- not perfect as the modifications are not significant enough to work if you
- want to run 50+ other INITs. If you want MacTCP to run on a slow machine, you
- will need to trim your system back otherwise your Plus will hose itself.

- Subject: MAC IIci/Quadra networking questions
-
- We are planning on brining up a network of about 17 mac iicis and
- about 3 quadra 700 systems to the general user community here at
- the University. All systems are running system 7.0.1.
-
- Three main questions.
-
- 1. Is there a pd/shareware program out there that allows us
- (via a novell fileserver) to delete any files, folders, etc.
- created by a user while he's using one of these macs ? Like a
- ERASE *.* in DOS, but goes down a tree and also blows away the root ?
-
- there is an application called RevRdist that will allow
- you to remove unwanteds and restore the system files and
- apps from an image on the server. i believe this is freeware
- and is available from j.cc.purdue.edu (/pub/mac).
-
- more time consuming and costly would be timbuktu or carbon
- copy, which allow you to take remote control of any machine
- with the software loaded in it on your network.
-
- 2. In Novell(or appletalk), can you set up folders, files, etc. to
- be write-locked and un-deletable ? I know about the "locked" check-
- box when you do a option-I(information) on a particular file...
-
- with novell you can set file attributes (delete inhibit,
- copy inhibit, read only, shareable etc) to files and dir
- attributes for directories. this only pertains to the
- server volumes and not individual hard drives. for local
- folder locking try folder bolt or others.
-
- 3. Can INITS be run/installed off of a fileserver, so that we can
- avoid installing these(ie. Gatekeeper, etc). on the individual Macs ?
- If so, how ?
-
- not unless you use RevRdist, which must be installed on the
- machine as well as the server, to update the individual macs
- from the *new* image (complete with inits, da's, cp's etc.).
-
- also there is a product from sonic systems that allows you
- to use a boot rom (DiskLess Mac) on your ethernet cards.
- this product will boot from an image on the server and then
- transfer the system files into a ram disk from the server.
- requires proprietary ethercards and 020 or better processors.
-
- thanks for any assistance.

- The most useful thing it can do for the general user is allow an easy

- >From a crash. When a crash occurs (if it's a "clean" crash, which most are),

-
- EA <return>
- That theoretically restarts the crashed program; don't hold your breath.
-
- RS <return>
- That restarts you 'safely', shutting down drives safely.
-
- RB <return>

- >delete them with MacTools FileEdit or some similar utility). Then run
- >FileSaver to make three new files from scratch and see if that doesn't
- >return you to the state you had before the problem appeared.
-
- I tried this, but to no avail. The problem remains. The pattern of
- interaction seems obvious: Quicken is trying to delete its CheckFree temp
- files, and Norton FileSaver is, for some reason, taking exception. (Or else
- Quicken is taking exception to some perfectly reasonable action on Norton's
- part.) I'm not knocking either program: they're both great, they've worked
- together beautifully for weeks, this is obviously a problem with MY SYSTEM.
-
- Will Porter suggested:
-
- >...it may be time to wipe the hard disk clean and start from scratch. Have
- >you tried running Norton's disk-diagnosis utility? I have had to replace my
- >System files several times recently after hard crashes; and two weeks ago,
- >reinitializing the hard disk was the only solution.
-
- I have good backups (one of everything, and two separate backups of
- critical documents), so I'm not TOO worried about having to do that --
- apart from the nasty inconvenience of spending two or three hours putting
- everything back together. (Norton and Disk First Aid, by the way, both give
- my disk a clean bill of health now.) The reasons for (possibly) having to
- reformat disturb me for another reason. It means, ultimately, that there is
- damage to my system that (a) can't be detected by Apple's own disk repair
- utility, by the hard disk vendor's drive-formatting utility, or by a
- top-rated commercial alternative; (b) can't be explained by either vendor's
- technical support staff after repeated phone calls; and (c) can't be erased
- by deleting all relevant software -- including all hidden and visible
- preferences and data files -- and starting from scratch.
-
- I find this thought quite scary. There are two things at the center of my
- intellectual life: my books and my Mac. I have yet to find a problem with a
- book that required tearing out all the pages and putting them back in
- again. (Maybe when Macs have been around for 3000 years, the technology

- Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep you posted. Anybody want to take bets

- I've a question for anyone out there who might be able to help. I've recenly

- forever (or about 25 seconds) for the drive to wake up. I never really noticed
- it
- taking too long with the Conner (maybe 10 secs.). I've tried it without any
- extensions loaded, or with the supplied SCSI tools, but no difference.
-
- The basic symptom is: drive comes back on line (usually to bong the clock, or
- prompt me to save a document), everything stops (except the mouse which
- happily moves all over the screen but is powerless to do anything) while the
- drive spins up (Whirrrrrrr) [1-2 secs] the heads are flown (chatter..
- chatter..
- rat-a-tat.. rat-a-tat.. chatter.. chatter) [another 1-2 secs] and then it
- just spins
- (whirrrrrrrrrrr) for an eternity (or a 20 second approximation of it), then
- everything starts going again. All of the mouse events in the intervening time
- are then executed, but about 1/3 of the keystrokes are lost.
-
- Other than this "problem" the drive is wonderful, much faster and quieter than
- the Conner (which sounded like the platter was being dragged across the
- inside of the drive cover (SQUEALLLLL,SCRATCH,SCRATCH,flup, flup,SQUEALLL).

-
- Has anyone else noticed some of the more subtle differences
- between the output generated by the DeskWriter 2.2 and 3.1
- drivers when working with Word 5.0a and TrueType fonts? For
- example:
-
- * With the old 2.2 driver, if large spaces occurred between
- words in fully justified text, then the spacing between
- characters (i.e. within words) on that line would be slightly
- increased to reduce the width of the white spaces (TeX does this
- as well, although it is forbidden in Hart's Rules, except for
- narrow columns). The 3.1 driver doesn't do this any more, and
- the output looks worse as a consequence (so much for Hart's
- Rules!).
-
- * TrueType fonts appear less bold with the 2.2 driver than the
- 3.1 driver, and the characters in the Times font seem to be
- *slightly* bigger with the 3.1 driver than 2.2, although the
- same number of characters fit on a line. Is this a trick by HP
- to use more ink and therfore to force people to buy more of
- their shiny new double-capacity, awkward to refill, cartridges?
-
- * Subscripts and superscripts print with better positioning
- using the 2.2 driver. With 3.1, there's a tendency to leave
- aither too big a gap between a character and a subscripted
- following character, or sometimes to leave too little space,
- resulting in the characters running into each other (either way,
- the system is unusable for scientific word processing).
-
- Just a comment, really.

- Subject: Unknown type/creator: MSCF/MSSU
-
- This file showed up on my crowded Cobra 210i hard disk recently, but I
- can't say for sure when:
-
- Filename: Microsoft Excel
- Type: MSCF
- Creator: MSSU
- Size: 700k
-
- The filename has an elipsis (OPTION- semicolon)as the last character, in
- case it doesn't show up as such once I Email this.
-
- I recognise neither the filetype nor the creator.
-
- Any suggestions?

- Subject: Up-to-date DoveFax+ software?
-
- As those of you with a DoveFax+ might know, the software is not exactly one
- of the best designed in the world 8-). (I have version 1.something).
-
- I understand that there is a v2.0.3. As Dove are in Chapter 11, and as I am
- not in the US (with a US-bought modem), can I ask?
-
- -- how good are Dove about sending out upgrades nowadays? (haven't got one
- yet) -- if they aren't, could somebody send me the images of the v2.0.3
- disks?
- -- is it really worth upgrading?
-
- I suppose it might be worth upgrading, if only to get rid of the effect that
- the FaxPrint chooser device has on the Chooser...

-
- I recall seeing Adam Engst recommend a utility called AppSizer in TidBits,
- and more recently in the latest MacUser. I've been unable to find it
- though, in the info-mac archives. Has it been removed? Help anyone?
- Thanks.

- Subject: Word Service Apple Event Suite
-
- We just had a review meeting for the Word Services Apple Event Suite
- documentation. It needs more work before we feel comfortable handing it
- out to the public. The spec is finished though. It has been posted on
- Applelink for some time now, along with working sample code. As soon as
- the spec is finished we plan on making it available on the Dev CD and on
- ftp.apple.com. Until then I think the best course of action is to contact
- the author, Michael Crawford of Working Software (D1620@Applelink.Apple.Com).
-
- For those wondering, the Word Service Suite is a system for doing batch and
- interactive services on text. The spec is not specific about what kind of
- service is provided, but the initial demo is spell checking. Other
- possibilities are grammar checking, language translation, encryption or
- any other service which can take a block of text and change it. The entire
- Word Services model uses Apple Events and the object model to allow a very
- simple implementation for "word processors" consisting of a single event and
- some simple AppleScript compatibility (i.e. support of several Core Apple
- Events as specified in the Apple Event Registry: Standard Suites). Once this
- simple suite is implemented, fully supporting scripting is only a small step
- away. In addition, support services this way allows you to make your app
- support an unlimited number of services for free since you don't need to
- know anything about the service or pay any fees to licence it.
-
- I believe this is a very nice example of the power of Apple Events. My hope
- is that we will have only 1 dictionary per machine, or even per network,
- since Apple Events are network transparent.
-
- I'll rant more as I get time. ;)

-
- I am looking for some 'how to' literature on file/folder sharing under
- system 7. I have read something somewhere about using aliases to be able
- to share the same files with different people. Each person could then be
- granted a different set of privileges for viewing or editing the same file.
-
- I also need to be able to access my entire hard disk from a remote site
- without
- giving people sharing folders on my disk the same privilege.
-
- So how do I do these things?

- Dear netters,
-
- Is there a simple way (e.g. an init) of modifying the date portion of the
- general control panel, so that it uses the European rather than the
- American ordering on an American copy of System 7? In other words, we would
- like it to be dd/mm/yy rather than mm/dd/yy. Although Microsoft Word allows
- one to re-configure the date for the European format, it seems that some
- applications, like FileMaker Pro, insist on accessing the System date
- directly.
- Of course, an obvious solution would be to get the UK version of System 7, but
- having already received and installed the American version on the machines
- here, we would ideally like to avoid the lengthy process of re-installation.
-
- Please reply directly to vincent.everett@mrc-apu.cam.ac.uk, and if there is
- interest I will summarise for the net.
-
- Cheers!
