  13. I am reasonably new to the world of Macintosh databases, and I have 
  14. encountered a situation that I can't handle...I'd appreciate any help
  15. the net can offer.

  17. One of our clients hopes to use a Macintosh database to catalogue
  18. elements of a west coast native language. Part of this task requires 
  19. that the database allow a mixture of fonts (possibly custom ones) and 
  20. styles within a text field. As well, fairly sophisticated text-
  21. searching functions are required (something based on regular 
  22. expressions would be nice). Finally, the data is already sitting in 
  23. some kind of file on an IBM mainframe which contains the font 
  24. information embedded within it. He would like to be able to import
  25. this data into the database in some way which will preserve the font 
  26. and style information.

  28. Here's what I know:
  29.  
  30. 1. FileMaker Pro won't do, because its text-search functions are
  31.    limited, and because it doesn't provide the kind of importing
  32.    options he needs, although it will allow varied, styled text
  33.    within fields.
  34.  
  35. 2. FoxBASE+/Mac won't do, because while it will do the kind of
  36.    searching he needs, font tricks apparently aren't part of its
  37.    repertoire.
  38.  
  39. 3. HyperCard can probably do everything that he wants, but he seems
  40.    hesitant to use it for some reason.
  41.  
  42. I have heard good things about 4th Dimension, but have never used it.
  43. Will this program do the kinds of things he needs, or does it suffer
  44. from similar limitations?
  45.  
  46. Are there any other kinds of database applications around which could
  47. tackle this job? (Especially: is anyone out there building a linguistic
  48. database on the Macintosh?)

  50. Any tips, pointers or advice will be gratefully accepted. E-mail or
  51. post replies, and I will summarize if there is interest.
