- Is there a way -- a program, init, CDEV -- that would allow me to
- password protect a file without encrypting/scrambling the file? What
- I'd like to happen is this:
-
- a) I double-click on a file
- b) Dialogue box pops up, says: "Please enter password:"
- c) If the password is correct, the file launches.
- d) If the password is incorrect, the dialogue box disappears and
- the user is returned to the finder.

- Ages ago, I used to own a TRS-80 Model III and used this sort of
- feature frequently. Instead of a dialogue box, however, the process
- was a little more difficult. I believe there was a way to append the
- password at the end of the filename. Something like: MYFILE/TXT.PASSWORD.
- And if the PASSWORD wasn't entered correctly, TRSDOS would give
- an error message: Password Incorrect -- and return me to the TRSDOS
- prompt. But there was no scrambling, no encryption, no lengthy waiting
- for things to happen in the background before the file was launched.
-
- Anyway, I'm wondering if this sort of the thing -- or something similar --
- is available (preferably shareware or PD) for the Mac. I have Norton Encrypt
- and an old Jasmine DEncrypt program that came with -- I think -- SUM
- utilities. The encryption programs work fine -- but I just wish I could
- launch the file faster. Norton Encrypt seems incredible slow -- especially
- with my relatively small 2K-4K files.
-
- Anybody have any ideas? E-mail or posts would be much appreciated.
