- Reference Mgr has the capability to accept import from MEDLINE and other
- reference database services or from keyboard entry. Once your database is
- developed, references can be retrieved by author, keywords, journal, year,
- editor, titles or notes. Each ref. is assigned a unique i.d. number. You have
- wild card options, as well as logical connectors (and/or, not, etc.) in the
- search function.
-
- Manuscripts can be written which refer to the unique i.d. numbers (set off
- by special characters). A "generate bibliography" feature will substitute
- the author's name and year in text (if that style is used) or reference
- citations (#'s 1, 2, 3, etc.) either in citation order or alphabetically
- by author. The program also then generates a bibliography list which
- can be added to the end of your manuscript. If used properly, it works great.
-
- Some care must be taken in the data entry phase to ensure that consistency
- is adhered to (same abbreviations used in journal entries, etc.).
-
- RIS has a nice brochure about their program, you may wish to call to request
- it. If you are at a university, you might check with your library to see
- if they have by chance purchased a site license for the program. Our medical
- library here at the Oregon Health Sciences University purchases 10 copies at
- a time, and then sells them to departments for around $200. It's a good program.
-
- Now, the bad part. I feel that the Mac version may not be as robust as I
- would like. I've had problems with the program unexpectedly quitting if left
- running on an unattended machine. This corrupts the entire data base
- (or it claims to have done so), and then the database must be re-indexed.
- This takes a fair amount of time for the number of references that I
- have (around 2800). This database is supposed to be capable of handling 32,000
- references, so it's not the size of the database that is the problem. I
- just have to be careful to close the program when not in use.
-
- I hope you find a program that meets your needs. This one has a lot of great
- features, and I'm sure the problem with crashes will be resolved in future
- editions. So far, I have not lost any of my references due to the crashes.
