- I've got a serial interface that has historically been done with
- hard logic rather that off-the-shelf Comm chips. It uses 13 bits
- (12 bits plus parity), 9600 baud, and synchronous. No bit
- stuffing, no CRC. It's pre-xDLC days. It uses a 13 bit idle
- to separate messages (I forget the pattern, but it's not standard),
- and in my particular application, the data is incoming only (simplex).
-
- Now I've been given a little info that the 68302 SCCs can, via
- software, handle this interface (the biggest gotcha being the odd
- word size). I've looked at the 68302 manual and nothing came out
- and bit me - no "word-length register" that allowed 13 bit formats.
-
- Questions:
-
- 1) Should I stop looking?
-
- 2) If the '302 SCCs CAN do this, are we talking a large
- coding overhead?
-
- 3) If it can be done, will it require a lot of external
- logic?
-
- 4) If it can be done, how? (Point me to "how", at least)
-
- 5) If it can be done, what kind of processing overhead are we
- talking about? Could two 68302's be used to handle five
- active interfaces (simplex) plus one transmitting interface
- (for testing and loopback purposes - same protocol).
-
- 6) If it can be done, can the 68302 do all this while standing
- on it's hind pins whistling 'Dixie'? :-)

- How about our Motorola friends? Floyd?
