- One data point:
-
- We have a homegrown circuit simulation program complete
- with graphics that shows register and probe values changing.
- It runs on both our Sun Sparcs and PCs. I have a 25MHz Sparc2
- on my desk at work and a 33MHz 486DX with 4Meg at home. The
- program can run for 20 minutes or so. Using a wall clock
- I cannot detect a significant difference in run time -- the 486 has a
- slight advantage. If anything, I believe that those times indicate that
- the Sun is faster since it is on an ethernet and is managing
- a complex set of windows (OpenWindows) including a number of
- jobs (clock, mailtool,...). The PC version does not run under
- Microsoft Windows.
-
- This example should not be interpreted too broadly. It indicates
- to me that the machines are reasonably close. I have no doubt
- that there are many programs that can show more significant
- differences between these machines. As with any machine, figure
- out what YOU need.
