- This reminds me of how I recently got 4MB of SIMMs fairly cheap. I was
- ordering a computer for a friend from Comtrade Computer (in Comp. Shopper)
- and, I figured that I might be able to get a better deal on the RAM I'd
- been planning to buy if I just had the guy throw an extra 4 onto the
- machine I was ordering. After all, he'd just sold a 386-40, you'd think
- he'd cut me a deal on a few extra megs. At the very least, I wouldn't have
- to pay for shipping, since they'd be riding 'stowaway' on the motherboard.
-
- Now, IC-Express currently sells 1MB 80ns SIMMS for $35 each WHEN ordered in
- lots of 12 or more. So, I figure $35 for a meg is a pretty decent price.
- So, I'm expecting to pay about $140 for the 4MB. So I ask the guy at
- Comtrade "How much to throw another 4MB on there?" and he says "Ninety
- bucks". I exclaim: "NINETY DOLLARS!?!?! For *FOUR* megs?!?!?!" and the guy
- says "Okay... I'll make it eighty.". So I go:"<gulp> Fine!" :-)
-
- They were even 70ns! Cool deal!
-
- So, if you know any friends who are ordering computers, you might want to
- try the same trick. Make SURE that they are of the same or faster speed and
- that they are, indeed, SIMMs and that they are 1MB ones. If you ask for a
- gob of extra RAM, there is the chance the place would just stick 4MB SIMMs
- on there which would have left ME with 4MB of RAM that I couldn't use in my
- SX-16.
