- I'm hoping that someone can help me with a few questions about
- SVGA stuff. I'll post a summary. Thanks.
-
- - Its my understanding that on a 386 (or above) machine, the upper
- memory area from 640-1024K is reserved for hardware, but if
- there is no hardware card in a particular area, then the space
- can be mapped to allow certain device drivers and buffers to use
- this area, saving space in the 640K area for applications. I'm using
- DR DOS 6.0, and I guess this is true for that and MS-DOS 5.0 and
- other things using a 386 memory manager. This is just for confirmation,
- or are there things to watch out for here?
-
- - The real question. How can I tell which addresses are being reserved by
- a SVGA card? I think that normally it should only grab 128K, but I can't
- tell from the limited documentation if this is true for this particular card.
- In fact, it implies that it wants A000-DFFF, which seems excessive, but
- its not really clear if this is the real range, or if it applies at all times.
- So is there something I can use to tell if I have to exclude this
- area explicitly from the memory manager?
-
- - This chip in the card is a Trident TVGA8900C, with a Quadtel ROM, but
- I don't think that this determines the map. But I was wondering what the
- differences were between the major VGA chip types like the 8900, Trident
- 9000, Tseng labs ones, others. What are their characteristics and
- also, which can be altered to use more than 256 colors (which I have been
- told can be done for some, but I don't know how).
-
- Thanks
