- The July PC Sources has reviews of 14 different 9600b modems. While they
- didn't review fax modems, I did find the reviews helpful. After the reviews
- they listed a number (>20) of modems and their features, including fax
- capability and chipset (e.g., Rockwell, AT&T, etc).
-
- I wanted the fastest, 'cause I'm that way. I basically looked for most
- bang/buck. I'll be running it under Linux so I didn't really care about
- DOS software or free time on CompuDowProdGen*. I was planning to go with
- external cause I heard that most internals don't come with the 16550 UART
- (appearently a MUST if you're running in a multitasking environment at that
- speed).
-
- I finally decided on an internal modem from Lightning Communications.
- It's 14.4 Data/Fax, V.32bis and V.17 fax (also Grp 3), MNP2-4, V.42bis w/MNP 5.
- It uses the Rockwell chipset, which seems to be most common. Here was the
- kicker: It has a 16550AFV chip (has FIFO) comes with both data and fax
- software (don't know how good it is) and it was a cool $279 ( + 7.75% tax,
- free ground shipping). I haven't got it yet as they're currently back ordered
- by a week. But they do have the somewhat standard 30 no risk deal. After
- Aug 8, they'll have an external model for about $40 more.
-
- If you want to check it out they're number is (714) 457-8001, support BBS
- is (714) 457-9429. They're in CA.
-
- Good luck,
- Larry
