  12. A friend of mine wants to upgrade from his 286-12 to a "real machine"
  13. (i.e. one that can run Ultima 7 8-).  Since it's been 3 years
  14. since I shopped for an IBM compatible, I'm a little behind in the
  15. trends of late, so bear with me.

  17. He wants to salvage as much as possible from his old machine (the
  18. floppy drive, hard drive, VGA monitor and card, basically - the memory
  19. and motherboard is a bust); I know the HD will probably be annoyingly
  20. slow (I think it's 28ms), but other than that, should there be a
  21. problem?  Does anyone know of a place (either mail order or in the
  22. Washington Metropolitan area) that would help us out, like selling a
  23. partial system and/or be willing to do the transferring of old equipment
  24. for us?

  26. Basically, what's the biggest "bang for the buck" out there, in terms
  27. of performance vs. price?  A speed comparison - or referrence to a
  28. comparison in some magazine - would be appreciated; he wants a 486DX-33,
  29. but I'm not positive that would be the best choice.  In particular,
  30. what's the deal with the 486sx and the OverDrive Processor (i.e. what
  31. exactly is it? a glorified math co-processor? does it really up system
  32. performance enough to make it worthwhile? what about the new OverDrive
  33. processors Intel's promising, any word on them?) and the 486D2 (what's
  34. all this about its bus-speed being half the processor's speed? don't
  35. that slow it down?); are these worth considering?  Is there anything I
  36. should watch out for/ask about (y'know, pitfalls, important tech specs,
  37. etc.)?

  39. How big of a deal is EISA vs. ISA; is there any reason not to get EISA,
  40. other than the extra cost?  How hard would it be to upgrade a 386/486
  41. later to either a 486 or the new P5 (assuming there's any real word
  42. on this one); basically what would he have to chuck?  How important
  43. is a hardware disk cache and how big would you suggest it be?  Beyond
  44. what I've asked, any general tips?
