- Sounds like the Virtuality game that hit our campus a few months back.
- This was the game featured on the Prime Time Live segment on VR a
- while back. (Think they called it NightMare, or some odd game-name
- like that.)
-
- Good experience if you've never done VR before. Two folks stand on
- their pod/platforms and don a head mounted display. You find yourself
- in a rather gaudy arena with the other player, running about and
- firing with the trigger/joystick mechanism you hold. Nice feel for
- looking around and aiming. The platform has a magnetic bar around it
- for steadying yourself, as well as detecting your current crouching
- position. You can duck down behind things and wait for your opponent
- to walk by, but at roughly a dollar a minute, it's not recommended.
-
- Playing this game will give you an idea of why current VR setups are
- mostly restricted to the government and academia. The HMD is
- production line quality, and I'd imagine rather expensive, despite the
- fact that it has a very small field of vision, and really gives very
- little impression of "being there." The company, however, has several
- VR video games installed in the UK, and I'm sure within the next
- several years we'll see the cost of the equipment come down, and
- become more available to the general public. At the moment, the only
- alternative to the "Hack a portable TV" HMD involves a VPL Helmet
- running around $2000 for the LEEP optics alone. Wonder if they give
- student discounts. :)
