  14. Hi.  I should have clarified this a bit more in the subject that I'm
  15. very experienced in computers, but not in PC clones.
  16. Anyhow, I'm about to buy a 486 machine, and I have a whole suite of
  17. questions to ask:

  19. -Anybody got a recommendation regarding SVGA cards?  I'm leaning towards
  20.   the Tseng ET4000 since the publicly available BSD386 supports this with
  21.   X.

  23. -Can I have multiple OSes residing on my disk if I partition it?  Ie,
  24. can I select a partition to boot off of?  I would like to put 3 OSes
  25. on the same disk:  BSD386, DOS/Windows 3.1 (NT when avail), OS/2

  27. -What is the latest revision of the freely available BSD386?  Is
  28. it stable?  Has anybody got X11R5 patch level 13 for it?  What graphics
  29. card should I use (I have a Mag Innovision MX15F 15" flatscreen 1280x1024
  30. non-interlaced monitor)?  Does it swap to a file, or do I need to
  31. make a partition?

  33. -Give me some recommendations for PD/shareware and potentially commercial
  34. softwares (hopefully inexpensive :) in the following categories:

  36.   -graphics and image processing
  37.     -I'd like to have something as nice as ADPro on the Amiga
  38.   -GNU emacs??? Does it exist for Windows?
  39.   -GNU C 2.0??? Does it exist for the PC?
  40.   -all the other std GNU utils?
  41.   -audio (I'm going to get a SoundBlaster or clone eventually)
  42.   -scanner control software (I have an Epson ES300C flatbed color scanner)
  43.   -other nifty utilities

  46. ie, I've found that most machines and OSes have a "MUST HAVE" software
  47. list.  What is this list for the PC? :>
