- Dear John,
-
- All instruments bearing an HP serial number have the date (approximately)
- of manufacture encoded in the serial number. As an example, consider the
- serial number 2823S41139 (from the back of the keyboard I am responding
- to this message with).
-
- The first two digits indicate the year of manufacture *from 1960*. So:
-
- 1960
- + 28 (first 2 digits from serial number)
- ----
- 1988 -- the keyboard was manufactured in 1988
-
- The next two digits indicate the *week* of the year it was manufactured. So:
-
- 23 indicates that it was manufactured in June (23rd week is in June)
-
- The next letter indicates the *country* of manufacture. So:
-
- S indicates Singapore
-
- A is for North Ameriace
- J for Japan
- M for Mexico, etc.
-
- The last 5 digits indicate the *sequence number* of manufacture. So:
-
- 41139th keyboard manufactured.
-
- For high volume products (calculators, as an example) the serial number may be
- reset on January 1 of each year.
-
- Hope this helps.
