- Regarding the use of 512k RAM cards intended for the 95LX in the 48SX...
- I am not familiar with the 95LX but, the 48SX is limited by the
- addressable memory it can access. In other words, the 48SX can only
- address memory using a 20 bit word. This allows 512k of addressable
- memory, which must include the 256k of ROM which leaves 256k of
- addressable RAM (keep in mind that the 48SX addresses by nibbles instead
- of bytes).
-
- To get 288k of RAM on the 48SX, something called "bank switching" is used
- that allows some ROM to be "hidden" or overlaid by RAM. In order to use
- a 512K RAM card, some form of bank switching must be used. A 512K bank
- switching RAM card is available from TDS (see EduCalc catalogue) for the
- 48SX. I wouldn't think that the 512k RAM cark for the 95LX can work in
- the 48SX.
-
- The TDS bank switching card is like having four 128k cards in one. The
- bank switching is an electronic means of removing one 128k card an
- replacing it with another. Because of this, only one bank of 128k memory
- is accessable at a time.
-
- Disclaimer: I am not knowledgeable enough to have figured this out on my
- own. The above is just what I have been able to gleen from the
- conversations of those more informed than I. I apologize for anything
- that isn't exactly correct.
-
- Hope this helps.
