- I got this string forwarded to me via mail (never have time to read notes),
- and normally we support folks try not to post here, so as not to give the
- impression that HP supports people through free channels (god forbid!),
- but you guys are so close I can't stand to just sit idly by. Besides,
- it's after 5...
-
- The problem is not in your installed software license:
-
- > HP-UX acme A.B7.00 U 9000/834 23506101
- ^
- |
- +--- Unlimited (see uname(2))
-
- But in the machine name, as has been pointed out. For most systems, the
- U is the only thing that is checked, giving the unlimited license.
- For restricted systems (The 600 series servers and the 8X4 series
- workstations), you can only buy a 2-User license (period). When login
- checks for how many users to allow, it checks the "9000/834" for this
- machine, and restricts the license to two. This is a slighly stricter
- login check than usual: only two unique users are allowed to login over
- the lan, or 2 direcly connected terminals/graphics tops, or one of each.
- Of course, to make life more interesting, the 600 series have strange
- uname output:
-
- uname shows sold as unrestricted version
- 834 834 835
- 836 635 835
- 844 844 845
- 846 645 845
- 843 642 842
- 853 652 852
-
- Actually, I don't think we ever sold the 642 and 652 servers, but I've
- included them here for completeness, should the numbers ever show up
- on somebody's system due to unrecognized hardware.
-
- The point of all this is that if you want a machine that doesn't
- have a 2-user restriction, you'll need to get your hardware upgraded
- to the "unrestricted" model in the chart above, which will allow the
- license to be configured in software. Note that the non-2-user machines
- above (835 and 845) also have 2 more CIO slots than the restricted ones.
-
- Of course "real hackers" (tm) can get around licensing issues, but that
- would be illegal...
