  13. Recently, a reply to a question about the HP 7906 disc drive stated that the
  14. HP1000 did not allow new discs to be generated into the system.  Both RTE-IVB and RTE-6/VM operating systems allowed the system generation to be modified.
  15. This process required changing the operating system's answer file and then
  16. running the generation program (RT4GN or RT6GN) to create the operating 
  17. system's executable file (like vmunix on Sun systems).  Then this executable
  18. program is SWTCH'ed in to the target disc.

  20. Unfortunately, when doing it this way, you also have to reload any utilities 
  21. you want customarily saved to the system logical units.  In the days of
  22. RTE-IVB and RTE-6/VM, the system had to reside on a File Manager (FMGR)
  23. configured logical unit.

  26. and how feasible it would be to install on a current system would be

  32. Byran McVay used to teach the RTE-6/VM System Management Course at HP's Anaheim educational facility.  He is very familiar with the older MAC and CS80
  33. drives and will be of great help.

  35. John Oury still maintains HP 1000 systems running RTE-IVB and RTE-6/VM
  36. operating systems.  He should be able to tell if the 7906 disc drives
  37. are still for sale.  I know that the HP 1000s that use those drives are
  38. not going to be supported by HP beyond 1999.

  40. Take into account that 7906 drives DO crash, once every six months would
  41. be a fair estimate, I think.  Also, they don't have much capacity 
  42. compared to the disc subsystems available today.
