- Mayfield does indeed give you access to patches via FTP! If you log into the
- support system and the main menu does not have an entry for "Get Patch
- Information," call HP support and 'tell' them about this. You are somehow
- accessing an old version of the support program! This happened to me a few
- months ago, and after some prodding, the owners of mayfield updated my account
- to use the new system.
-
- BUT... The list of available patches on mayfield is puny and generally out of
- date. 90% of the patches mentioned in this newgroup are not available on
- mayfield! Rationale for this is usually given in terms of "we're protecting
- the user from over-patching" or some such, which is IMHO a noble goal, but I
- think that hp support is going about it all wrong. There's no way that they
- can anticipate what patches are important to what customers, and by limiting
- availability of patches on mayfield, they are bound to leave somebody out in
- the cold.
-
- My suggestion would be (and has been) as follows: HP SE's have access to a
- _large_ collection of patches and tools on hpfcse.fc.hp.com. Suppose they
- mirror this collection onto mayfield? Add an area on mayfield called
- "UNSUPPORTED" or some such and include as many warnings and caveats as you
- like in that area. The less experienced user can still access the 'approved'
- patches in the normal area, but those of us who have more specialized needs
- (and no SupportLine contract!) are also served -- albeit at our own risk.
- Just a thought....
