- I have a support contract that allows me access to support.mayfield.hp.com
- but I agree with Grag Cagle that it is not a friendly system to use. Let me
- pose an idea and ask the net what it thinks.
-
- Background: (i.e., how I find out about patches)
- My best source of patches/bugs info is comp.sys.hp; I typically see a problem
- that I have (or may have not encountered yet) addressed in an article and a
- kind soul usually responds with an answer of the form "get PATCH PHxx_nnnn and
- that will solve your problem". Great, but support.mayfield.hp.com does not
- lend itself to such a query. If I'm wrong, don't flame - educate me.
-
- Idea #1:
- support.mayfield.hp.com has an ftp directory available to us paying customers.
- We log in and answer the password and whatever other id info is necessary.
- There is a directory called /pub/patches; I can do a binary get of any patch
- named as PHxx_nnnn.
-
- Idea #2:
- support.mayfield.hp.com has a mail server for patches; the requestor sends the
- request with a line such as
- send PHxx_nnnn
- and id info such as
- contract #
- Support_handle ________
- in the body of the message. The mail server validates the id info, possibly
- further validates by matching requestor user@address to known supported site
- addresses, logs any needed info regarding the requestor, and sends the patch
- to the requestor.
-
- Is the problem that this is too simple? Apology for the sarcasm. Seriously,
- tell me who to mail this to and I will happily do so. Discussion is welcome.
- Responses from HP, particularly OFFICIAL ones, are hoped for - not just
- responses from the kind souls with hp.com addreses (Frank Slootweg, et al)
- which regularly make this newsgroup a much better source of support. If you
- prefer one idea over the other, please let me know.
-
- With
- Vuewm*Mail*chime: true
- I anxiously await your judgement.
