- Hello Folks!
-
- We, Newfoundland Offshore Contractors, are in a bind concerning our
- Decserver 300s and I'd like to know if anyone of you have any simmilar
- experience.
-
- As you may know, the Decserver 300 software has been updated to include
- support for Telnet and all the related attributes. The software revision
- we have is BL34-C2, which I'm assured by DEC is the latest.
-
- Our problem is as follows. We have set up each Decserver 300 to have a
- port as Telnet listener. This listener is port 2001, logically. The port
- is set for "remote" and we have a printer connected to it.
-
- Now, we have a new Data General Aviion box sending it's print jobs using
- 'lp' through the network, using the "termprinter" definitions that are
- set for a Telnet Port 2001. The Decserver's ip address is define
- properlly in the '/etc/hosts' file.
-
- Ok, it prints... but we experience 2 distinct problems, and we think the
- Decserver or the network connection in general may be the cause, because
- these problems cannot be duplicated when a printer is connected directly
- to the DG's parallel port.
-
- Problems :
- 1. Printer times out for 5 minutes on average between
- jobs. Never quite stable pattern for size, etc ..
-
- Remark: The Decserver 300 Internet count show a sharp
- increase in "dropped" connections during this
- pseudo "timeout". At the same time, the port
- is idle and not XOFfed.
-
- 2. Printer receives a spurious <CR> character at the
- beginning of each job. This is important, because
- we have an "intelligent" check-printing box that
- looses count and VOIDS everything.
-
- Remark: The checkprinter also suffers from (1.)
-
- Now, I know that a DG isn't a DEC box, but I had hopped that it wouldn't
- matter, since 'lp' is also used by Ultrix. So, if anyone out there uses
- a Decstation 5000 or any other Unix box, especially a DG, with a
- Decserver 300 for printing using 'lp' or any Telnet Listener
- configuration, please send me E-mail.
-
- Thank You all.
