- Not powering down (except for maintenance and repair) is a good way to extend
- the useful life of the hardware as well. Voltage spikes are nasty, and are
- not entirely eliminated by the capacitors. I'd say you were lucky to get away
- with nil floppy damage over 7 whole years. My first impression after moving
- from Sinclair microdrive cartridges to floppy disks was how robust disks are.
- Nevertheless, I had regular failures until I started observing these two
- practices that I mentioned. Instead of a 60-90% likelihood of damaging the
- media (microdrive tape) it had become 5-20% (floppy disk). I have noticed that
- floppies are sensitive to power surges on Atari ST, PC clones, Macintosh,
- Sinclair QL, CP/M systems. I know of some floppy-only PC computers which are
- left 24 hours a day, 365+ days of the year serving as IP routers. If the boot
- disks (left in the drives at all times) are not replaced at regular intervals,
- then the probability of eventual failure (often within a year) has been shown
- to be high.
