  25. Not powering down (except for maintenance and repair) is a good way to extend
  26. the useful life of the hardware as well. Voltage spikes are nasty, and are
  27. not entirely eliminated by the capacitors. I'd say you were lucky to get away
  28. with nil floppy damage over 7 whole years. My first impression after moving
  29. from Sinclair microdrive cartridges to floppy disks was how robust disks are.
  30. Nevertheless, I had regular failures until I started observing these two
  31. practices that I mentioned. Instead of a 60-90% likelihood of damaging the
  32. media (microdrive tape) it had become 5-20% (floppy disk). I have noticed that
  33. floppies are sensitive to power surges on Atari ST, PC clones, Macintosh,
  34. Sinclair QL, CP/M systems. I know of some floppy-only PC computers which are
  35. left 24 hours a day, 365+ days of the year serving as IP routers. If the boot
  36. disks (left in the drives at all times) are not replaced at regular intervals,
  37. then the probability of eventual failure (often within a year) has been shown
  38. to be high.
