- More to the point: is there anybody out there who has never had this problem?
- What is probably happening here is dust or disturbed magnetic particles on the
- boot disk. During the booting something in the GEM system area gets trodden on,
- so as soon as the desktop tries to come up it falls over. It is also common for
- the machine to hang or reset before the desktop appears.
-
- How to prevent this from happening:
-
- 1) Never leave disks in the drives unless they are being accessed once in a
- while, dust settles on the disks. This is why some double-sided floppies fail
- and become only useable as single-sided floppies (dust does not settle on the
- underside) and why single-sided floppies tend to last a lot longer.
-
- 2) Never ever switch the power to the ST on or off while a disk is in the
- drive. Electrical spikes from switching the power often cause magnetic glitches
- on the disk. Yes, I know it says in the manual "Insert boot disk and then
- switch on the power". Instead, switch on the machine _without_ a boot disk,
- press and hold the reset button while you insert the boot disk, then release
- the reset button. I had regular floppy disk failures before I realised this.
