- I have also experienced this problem. The cause is the litte SMD chip inside
- the mouse, if I remember correctly it's just a simple 74LS... type that likes
- to fail in a whole batch of ST mice.

- If you're good at soldering, replace it. I bought a "refurbished" mouse.
