- How's this for an inflammatory post?
-
- I admit to owning several pieces of pirated SW, although none have been
- acquired recently and none are in current use. I have always treated such
- acquisitions as shareware: try 'em out to see if they're worthwhile and go
- buy a real copy if repeated use appears likely. If I don't use them I don't
- destroy them, I just stash them for posterity. Is this illegal? I'm sure
- it is, but I fail to see how it runs counter to the author's benefit. I
- have bought SW because of this that I would not have otherwise, and I have
- not failed to buy SW that I would have otherwise, so how have I damaged the
- authors? The goal of all this copyright stuff is to see that an author
- gets to benefit from the fruits of his efforts, nicht wahr?
-
- By contrast, I must admit that I have a couple of bits on my ST that are
- shareware and are being used regularly that I have not paid for. My excuse
- is that they are of some age and it is a bunch of trouble to go find the
- author so I can pay him. That's not a good excuse and I do intend to make
- things right. In fact, you may see me post here to see if anyone knows
- where some of these folks are today. Time to pursue it is the biggest
- problem.
-
- 'Scuse me while I go don my asbestos suit....
