- Well, I don't have any of your problems (or equipment, other than the
- 800XL), but I would guess that it's the modem. My 1030 started acting
- up a few years back--it still works, but (well, it's been a long time)
- I think the lights stay on even when it's not connected and it does a
- few other things weirdly. My understanding is that while my power
- cords are plugged into a surge protector, this does little (as in
- nothing) to protect the modem from spikes on the phone line. My brother
- had his whole system fried by a lightening strike on the phone line
- (if I remember that one correctly...).

- I believe that you can get surge protectors for phone lines as well, though
- I suspect that dangerous spikes are much more rare or we would hear more
- about them.
