  20.          GENIE FIGHTS TO PRESERVE CLASSIC APPLE II SOFTWARE

  23. General Electric Information Service (GEnie) is preserving
  24. discontinued commercial Apple II software by persuading authors to
  25. allow archiving of their programs and by re-releasing some programs as
  26. Shareware or Freeware, or arranging for software to be placed in the
  27. Public Domain.
  28.  
  29. GEnie's Lost Classics project will make copies of participating Apple
  30. II software available in GEnie's A2 Roundtable and release source
  31. codes in the A2Pro Roundtable for preservation and updating purposes.
  32. Dean Esmay, GEnie's Apple II Roundtable manager said, "The Apple II's
  33. effect on modern computing has changed the way an entire generation
  34. thinks and acts.  We are not about to let that pass into oblivion."
  35.  
  36. The following are the primary goals of this effort:
  37.  
  38. o     Find and preserve Classic Apple II software including
  39.       source code, whenever possible, in order to prevent
  40.       inadvertent loss due to accident or misplacement. These
  41.       will be stored as electronically compressed archives on
  42.       optical disk cartridges.
  43.  
  44. o     Provide access to commercial software titles which have
  45.       otherwise become unavailable.
  46.  
  47. o     Provide a center for dated software in need of updating
  48.       to remain compatible with modern Apple II hardware and
  49.       system software.  This may include contracting with
  50.       third-party programmers.
  51.  
  52. GEnie seeks to enlist the help of both the Apple II user and
  53. programmer communities in locating copyright owners and helping to
  54. preserve Apple II Lost Classics.  For further information, modem users
  55. may visit the A2 Roundtable on GEnie or send GEnie E-mail to A2.HELP.

  57. A2 is the Apple II Users Roundtable on GEnie and A2Pro is GEnie's
  58. Apple II Programmers and Developers Roundtable.
  59.  
  60. Shareware, Freeware and Public Domain software may be freely copied by
  61. the public.  These have become popular alternatives to traditional
  62. software publishing.  In the case of Shareware, a user is honor-bound
  63. to mail a specified payment to the author should the customer continue
  64. using it after a free trial period.
