  13. Having a problem with a friend's GS, and I sure could use
  14. some advice. It started with one day just refusing to boot,
  15. after having had a problem while trying to save an AW 3.0
  16. file.

  18. Here's the setup:

  20. ROM 1
  21. 4 MB memory on an OctoRAM board.
  22. ZIP GS
  23. Fingerprint card
  24. Apple SCSI with CMS 40 in slot 7 - boot.
  25.  
  26. On boot, whether by slot 7, or by changing to 5 and trying a
  27. valid startup floppy (ProSel, AW 3.0, Print Shop, etc), it
  28. bombs into the monitor at 00/A0A0. A warm boot causes it to
  29. bomb at 00/0000. The code that appears is 00 47. Comaprison
  30. with my machine shows that I have the JMP code to $D???.
  31. Inserting it into his and doing 0000G gets him to the
  32. bracket prompt, but then it hangs.

  34. Examination of Control Panel settings show such non-default
  35. settings as Modem Port = 2400 bps intact, indicating battery
  36. problems are not likely.

  38. With the ZIP, Fingerprint and RAM board out, symptoms are
  39. indentical.

  41. Booting with option down to get the startup control panel
  42. access works, but only if the SCSI is in. With the SCSI out,
  43. it generally bombs to $08FF, Unclaimed Sound Interrupt.
  44. Although occasionally it results in an ADB error $0911.
  45. Heat is not the problem - the top is off completely and the
  46. machine hasn't been on except for 15 minutes intermittently
  47. out of the last hour.

  49. With the SCSI out and boot set to slot 5, a floppy using P8
  50. will boot, but at various places, the program refuses to
  51. run. AW 3.0 asks for a startup disk, despite the fact it's a
  52. complete AW system disk. Warm reboot causes CHECK STARTUP
  53. DEVICE. Copy II Plus 8.1 starts up, but bombs to monitor
  54. when you try to catalog it (and if you try to warm boot it
  55. again, you get UNABLE TO LOAD UTILITY.SYSTEM, and again you
  56. try and get CHECK STARTUP DEVICE). AW 2.0 loads, asks for
  57. the date, and when you give it, it just hangs without
  58. obvious bombing to monitor; warm reboot causes CHECK STARTUP
  59. DEVICE.

  61. After each CHECK STARTUP DEVICE, control panel settings of
  62. slot 5 to Smart Port and startup slot of 5 are intact.

  64. Every warm reboot from a P8 disk with option down - going to
  65. Control Panel - gives an Unclaimed Sound Interrupt.

  67. Booting 16 bit programs are very consistant. After 1/4 or so
  68. of booting, it bombs. With ProSel 16, the thermometer
  69. starts, but it dies with an Unclaimed Sound Interrupt. A
  70. virgin system disk 5.0.4 does exactly the same. Starting
  71. 5.0.4 with the spacebar down shows Failure Loading GS.OS
  72. File, $0027. (fMapTrashedErr ?). Of course, these are with
  73. the RAM card in, since there's only 256 K on board without
  74. it.

  76. Any ideas? It seems whatever it is, the SCSI card makes it
  77. worse. I'm out of things to try that make any sense. If
  78. anyone has suggestions, I'd appreciate it. If you need more
  79. info, tell me what to try, and I'll tell you the results.
