- Hi, Lance...
-
- I've been researching CDROM on the Amiga for about a year now and am just
- about ready to take the plunge. In answer to some of your questions...
-
- > Is there a "standard" CDROM drive?
-
- Yes... it is a SCSI drive for Macs and Amigas. Additionally, the disks
- themselves have different formats... ISO 9660 for IBM and Amiga, HFS for
- Mac.
-
-
- > If I just go out and buy a SCSI NEC, Toshiba, etc... is this driver
- > software going to let me access what I need it to?
-
- Yes, but buy the driver software FIRST and then buy a CDROM drive from a
- reputable vendor in Computer Shopper. Not all software supports all CDROM
- drives, so get one of the drives that is supported.
-
- The ad you refer to comes from Asimware Innovations. They responded to a
- mailed inquiry of mine and were the 1st company to do so... neither Xetec
- nor Canadian Prototype Replicas answered my letters. You KNOW who I'll be
- doing business with soon. ;-)
-
-
- > Can anyone tell me about the Xetec CDROM drive?
-
- Sure. It's a Chinon CDS-431x drive that supposedly has a 350 msec access
- time. Asimware recommends this drive for its reliability after a year's
- worth of "hard use". The Toshiba 32xx and 33xx series of drives are quite
- good as well.
-
-
- > I know CDROM drives are quite slow, but what is considered
- > 'too slow' for this type of drive?
-
- Anything under 400 msec is considered fast enough for serious use. Many of
- the better CDROM drives are in the 350 msec access time range. Some drives
- are 500 msec and even 800-1000 msec. Be sure to get a drive that is <400
- msec access time or you will spend a lot of time waiting for files to be
- found.
-
- Hope that this helps a bit. C ya,
-
-
-
