  12. There are a number of reasons why there are not an 68EC040 boards out there
  13. yet.
  14.  
  15. 1)  The 68EC040 is rather new and the timing on the EC part is different
  16.     than that of the regular part.  For board designs that are tight,
  17.     this can be a problem.
  18.  
  19. 2)  The V37.175 ROM can not handle a 68EC040 CPU.  This is because the
  20.     ROM was finished before the 68EC040 CPU was finalized and some of
  21.     the technical issues are not addressed in the V37.175 ROM.  The
  22.     newer V37.300 and V37.350 ROMs work with the 68LC040 and 68EC040.
  23.     (Note that these are the new ROMs that also added the PCMCIA support
  24.     needed for the A600.  They are currently called 2.05 since they
  25.     are very minor upgrades to the 2.04 ROMs.)

  27. 3)  The main reason people tend to buy 68040 CPUs is for the speed it gives
  28.     them.  A major part of this speed is the FPU in the 68040.  It is
  29.     blindingly fast.  The 68EC040 and 68LC040 does not have this FPU.

  31. That all said, I am sure that someone will build an EC040 CPU card.
  32. The CPU is much cheaper and the integer performance is just as good as
  33. the 68040.
