- After moving my amiga 3000 miles, I put it all back together and was relieved
- to find it was still working. I just put together a msdos compatable, and
- since I was planning to network them in some way via serial port, I put a
- switchbox between the A1000 and the PC so that I could switch to a null
- modem once in a while.
-
- I turned both machines on, both booted up fine. Then I switched the a/b
- switch, and zap. The Amiga screen turned grey, and never came back.
- I think this might have something to do with the serial pinout being
- different, but unfortunately I left the pinout on the wrong coast of this
- continent. I did use a A1000 specific serial cord to the switchbox, but all
- the other cables were straight db25's. However, before I put the switchbox
- between them, I tried just hooking the two machines together with a null
- modem, and did manage to get transfers of 4800 baud from the amiga to the
- pc, and 19200 from the pc to the Amiga (why it could go faster one way I
- don't know... the serial port on the amiga was already weak?)
-
- Anyway, the initials symptoms the A1000 displayed were that it would either
- just turn on, the power led would not blink, and the screen would just stay
- grey. Occasionally, after an hour or so cooling off, the screen would
- turn white, it would play it's cute little A1000 kickstart tune, and then
- df0: would start making a horrible noise like the head was stepping back
- and forth between two tracks at 60hz.
-
- I opened up the case, and saw two chips with identical numbers
- 8520R2 -- 3085S . I figured these must be the famous CIA's that
- I've heard so many sob stories about. I switched them around, and
- something different happens now. The power led always blinks on powerup
- like normal, the kickstart tune plays, and then the screen turns white, but
- still no kickstart picture. I noticed there are two smaller identical chips
- next to those, but their numbers are slightly different (by one), so I didn't
- switch them. Is this what happened, did I fry my CIA's? If not, what did
- I do. How much do CIA's cost? Are they readily available ( I do live in
- silicon valley now)?
-
- This is the setup:
-
- A1000
- 2 2meg Starboards (4meg fast) (no small feat to get them to work together)
- AdIDE + 85meg seagate HD (yup, had to ground the PAL's)
- Moustime clock
-
- Do any of you guys even remember an A1000, let alone how to fix it?
- I'd love to use this as an excuse to toss this thing out and get a 3000,
- but sociology majors don't make enough money to do that. Please help!
