- BIX and Portal are both worthy of consideration for Amigans. BIX is
- actually slightly cheaper without considering phone connection. Recently
- BIX went from a flat rate program for phone connection, which was very
- good, to a PCP-like $20/20hr alternative. They do NOT allow direct connect
- via a local line (without extra charges). Portal DOES. I have been on BIX
- for a number of years and on Portal ever since the "AmigaZone" moved to
- Portal. I disagree with the comments about signal to noise ratio on Portal
- (except in the Usenet newsgroups). I have found the vendor support areas
- on Portal and the general Amiga databases on Portal to have minimal noise
- compared to what they could have. Usenet is a different story but people
- who join Usenet newsgroups know that and are ready for it. The availability
- of Usenet and now the Internet services as well on Portal let the member
- decide what the nature is of their communications. CIS "basic services" does
- not include nearly as many options as Genie's does at significantly less
- money--they are not equivalent. Neither can match BIX OR Portal for Amiga
- related items, even if you go beyond basic service. I am not negative to
- ANY of the services discussed here. They all provide high quality options,
- but CI$$$$$ charges unreasonably for what they provide.
