- Well, we fixed it. I'm not sure how, but we fixed it.
-
- The disk wasn't spinning up, and I suspected a stiction problem, so I
- tried the standard remedy. (Lift the front of the machine about three
- inches and drop it.) No dice. We opened the case and noticed the LED
- on the drive itself was functioning, so we knew it was getting power.
- We reseated the connectors, pounded on the hard drive case, and tried
- again...still no dice. My roommate (he's the hardware guy...I only do
- software) noticed that the power connector for the floppy drive was the
- same shape as the power connector for the hard drive, so he checked the
- voltages to make sure they matched, which they did. We plugged the
- hard drive into the floppy's power connector...it spun up! We switched
- it back to its own connector...it still worked! We put everything back
- together before it changed its mind, and it's still working 24 hours
- later. There wasn't even any filesystem damage to speak of.
-
- I'm not sure why switching to the floppy power connector would make any
- difference...maybe it was just a coincidence, and it would have started
- working anyway.
-
- Next project: my ATT470 printer spontaneously jumps in and out of
- compressed mode...most annoying.
-
- Thanks to Don Nichols, Mark Crimmins, and Paul Marxhausen for their
- replies!
