- In the referenced article I criticized the author of an earlier
- message for not acknowledging the role of the originator of Z,
- Jean-Raymond Abrial. The message I criticized was a long press
- release praising the Oxford Programming Research Group and IBM
- Hursley laboratories on the occasion of their receiving the Queen's
- Award for Technological Achievement for their development and use
- of Z. My complaint had nothing to do with the award itself, of course,
- but with the absence of any mention of Abrial's name.
-
- Since then I have corresponded with Prof. C.A.R. Hoare, Director of the
- Oxford PRG, who has assured me that the omission was not intentional
- and that the PRG's literature properly acknowledges Abrial's role.
- He also sent me a copy of a recent joint IBM-PRG publicity brochure on Z
- which mentions Abrial clearly and fairly. So it appears that the lack
- of reference to Abrial in the network posting was just an unfortunate
- but isolated incident.
