  15.                      THE REMOTE ANDREW DEMO SERVICE!

  17. After being offline for several weeks due to reorganization of our
  18. filesystem it has been returned to service, now on an RS/6000!  (The
  19. demo service previously operated on 4 IBM RT's.)
  20.  
  21. This revolutionary network service allows you to run Andrew Toolkit
  22. applications without the overhead of obtaining or compiling the Andrew
  23. software.  It used to be that trying out Andrew required ftp'ing
  24. megabytes of source and performing a lengthy build... but no longer! 
  25. The Remote Andrew Demo service will have you running Andrew software
  26. within 5 minutes.

  28. You need a host machine on the Internet, and you need to be running the
  29. X11 window system.  A simple "finger" command will allow you to
  30. experience ATK applications firsthand.  You'll be able to compose
  31. multimedia documents, navigate through the interactive Andrew Tour, and
  32. use the Andrew Message System to browse through CMU's three thousand
  33. bulletin boards and newsgroups.  NOTE: some corporate networks restrict
  34. incoming network access in such a way that the Demo Service cannot
  35. function.

  37.                          HOW TO USE THE SERVICE

  39. To use the Remote Andrew Demo service, simply run the following command
  40. on your machine:

  42.     finger help@atk.itc.cmu.edu

  44. The service will give you any further instructions that may be necessary.

  46.                              WHAT IS ANDREW?
  47.  
  48. The Andrew Toolkit (ATK) is a multimedia graphical toolkit running under
  49. X11.  It provides, among other things, an editor for composing rich-text
  50. documents complete with embedded insets such as raster images,
  51. spreadsheets, graphs, drawings, animations -- even embedded audio and
  52. video.  Documents can be cross-referenced with embedded "hyperlinks."
  53.  
  54. ATK includes an application builder, extension language, and a rich set
  55. of object types which make the creation of complex graphical interfaces
  56. easy.  ATK is an open system, allowing new object types to be written in
  57. C.  There's also an ATK-based mail/news program which allows the sending
  58. of graphical ATK documents through the mail.  It complies with the
  59. forthcoming Internet RFC concerning multimedia mail formats (the "MIME"
  60. RFC).

  62. ATK has been a part of the campus computing environment of Carnegie
  63. Mellon University since 1986 and has continuously evolved to remain at
  64. the forefront of multimedia information technology.  The Andrew Toolkit,
  65. release 5.0, is available free of charge on MIT's current distribution
  66. of X11 (release 5), in the directory contrib/andrew.  And coming soon, a
  67. binary distribution of Andrew on CD-ROM, compiled for several of the
  68. most popular Unix platforms.
