  27. The referenced article was published in ERCIM No 9 (about one page
  28. long). ERCIM is an acronym for European Research Consortium for
  29. Informatics and Mathematics. A number of european research institutes
  30. are publishing this paper.

  33. GMD/Fokus (the german ERCIM Member) has developed a prototype for
  34. External References in E-Mail. The author of the mail can decide
  35. which parts of the mail should be placed in a public (?) database
  36. instead of being delivered by mail. The extracted parts are replaced
  37. by a "external reference", which can be used to retrieve the data
  38. from the database by the receiver.

  40. It is possible to create something like "news" with this approach. An
  41. author can create a reference for multiple use, that means that you
  42. can resolve the reference more than once. It is also possible, to
  43. replace the piece of data in the database. This allows something like
  44. updating the news.
  45. The prototype can be demonstrated (based on NeXTstep User Interface),
  46. but there is no public available piece of code outside of GMD. The
  47. prototype does not use special features of X.400, because the
  48. reference-data is placed inside of the ascii-body. But we are working
  49. on this issue.
