  10. I've inherited a system administration job for the summer that includes a
  11. network of approximately 100 Suns, Macs, and PCs.  A Sun fileserver is
  12. running the CAP programs (atis, lwsrv, aarpd, etc.) to set up spooling
  13. for the Apple LaserWriters and handle printing from all the above machines.
  14.  
  15. Things have been operating pretty smoothly for quite awhile, until today.
  16.  
  17. All of a sudden, we are having problems printing from the Macs.  We
  18. get messages back from the PrintMonitor like
  19.  
  20. Unable to print document " " because of communications failure.
  21.  
  22. When I look at the spool directories in the Sun, the error files
  23. contain messages like:

  25. papif: Starting job for root@isye at Wed Jul 29 15:50:07 1992 on
  26. printer ISyE -
  27. DO NOT USE - 113:LaserWriter@*
  28. open: /dev/enetXX: Device busy
  29. papif: PAPOpen returns -1098

  31. papif: PAPOpen returns -1098
  32. papif: Problems finding ISyE - DO NOT USE - 113:LaserWriter@*

  34. In addition, there seems to be a fair number of 0/1 byte jobs being
  35. sent to the printers as a result of the laserwriter server software
  36. that invariably hang the printer until such time as we notice them and
  37. clear them from the queue.

  39. Anybody seen this before or got any ideas about what might be wrong?
  40. Like I said above, this is a new problem, although we have been
  41. running CAPS for a long time now.
