- I have a LaserWriter IIf connected to an SGI machine over a serial port.
- Using the printer spooling software provided with the operating system, I
- can designate machines which are "authorized" to print documents.
-
- Unfortunately, the serial interface is very very slow compared to the speed
- of an LocalTalk connection. The building is wired for LocalTalk, there's
- a gateway in place between LocalTalk and ethernet, and I could probably
- get the cables this afternoon. Unfortunately, I would lose the access
- control that I now have.
-
- When a LaserWriter is connected to a Mac which acts as a print spooler, the
- first thing the print spooler software does is to tell the printer that it
- isn't a printer anymore; the spooler then advertises to the network that it
- is a printer, so you see the spooler and not the printer when you open the
- Chooser to select a printer.
-
- I want to know how this is done so I can tell the printer that it isn't a
- printer, then modify CAP to print to the "not-printer" so that it can be
- put on the building LocalTalk network for speed while maintaining access
- control. How is this done?
-
- Replies by email will be summarized. Code samples would be excellent.
- Thanks in advance. Void where prohibited. WA residents need not affix postage.
