- I'm new to the world of Macintosh networking, so if these questions
- are too basic for the group, receive my sincere apologies.
-
- I've been faced with the task of making five Macintosh machines "talk"
- to each other (Appleshare and Mail), and have run into a couple of
- problems I hope you can help me solve. Once again, I apologize if I'm
- not using the correct terminology.
-
- The Mac's all have ethernet cards and are loaded with MacTCP. I intend
- to use one of them as the Appleshare server, as it has system 7 loaded.
- My questions are the following:
-
- o Can I use thin wire ethernet the same way I use LocalTalk
- (i.e. to run Appleshare and Mail)
- o Does the ethernet line have to be in a ring topology, or can
- it be a line with open ends?
- o Do I need MacTCP to run Appleshare and Mail? Can I just use
- ethertalk?
- o MacTCP requires that I give each Mac an IP address. How do I
- determine a unique IP address? Can I skip this step since I don't
- plan to use telnet or FTP?
-
- Any help will be appreciated. E-Mail or posts would be great.
- Thank you.
