- Re: University Parallel Processing Laboratories Workshop
-
- Dear Educator:
-
- Computer System Architects is sponsoring the University Parallel Processing
- Laboratories Workshop (UPPL) September 10-11 at Alta Lodge. This workshop is
- intended for anyone interested in teaching hands-on parallel processing. The
- setting is Alta Lodge, a great country inn famous as a ski and nature retreat,
- just 50 minutes up Little Cottonwood Canyon from the Salt Lake City airport.
-
- The workshop will be an intensive 2-day course with lecture and hands-on
- laboratory time. The proposed schedule of events is enclosed. Instructors
- will include Chris Nevison of Colgate University, Rod Tosten of Gettysburg
- College, and Duane Call of Computer System Architects (along with a number of
- Brigham Young University Computer Engineering students who will function as
- lab assistants). Dr. Nevison is chairman of Computer Science at Colgate
- University and is one of the pioneers in using the British-designed transputer
- for educational purposes. He has conducted a number of NSF-funded
- Undergraduate PARallel Computing (UPARC) workshops relative to undergraduate
- laboratories for parallel computing. Dr. Tosten has participated in UPARC
- workshops and is currently using transputers for undergraduate parallel
- processing coursework. He has experience on a variety of host machines and
- parallel processing languages including Occam and Logical Systems C. Dr. Call
- is president of Computer System Architects and has been involved in transputer
- product development since 1985. He has extensive experience in the development
- of undergraduate computing laboratories in connection with the Computer Science
- and Electrical Engineering Departments of Brigham Young University where he
- served as faculty member from 1971 to 1988.
-
- Those attending the UPPL workshop will gain a thorough understanding of the
- use of transputer-based laboratories in parallel processing education.
- Workshop participants will be introduced to C.A.R. Hoare's Communicating
- Sequential Processes (CSP) concepts and their embodiment in the SGS-Thomson
- /Inmos transputer and the Occam2 programming language. Participants will be
- encouraged to complete a number of hands-on laboratory exercises, writing
- multi-processing programs for execution on single and parallel transputer
- processors. They will also be exposed to parallel programming environments
- for C, FORTRAN, Pascal and Modula-2. Extensive lecture, lab and curriculum
- notes will be provided so that participants can return to their respective
- institutions and launch economical and effective teaching laboratories for
- undergraduate education programs.
-
- The total cost of the two-day workshop is $375.00, including meals & lodging.
- Registration materials are enclosed herewith. Please pass a copy of this
- notice on to others who might benefit from our workshop. Also, feel free to
- call Computer System Architects at (801) 374-2300, and ask for Lyle, Wendy or
- Scott, if you have suggestions or questions regarding it.
-
- Best regards,
-
