- I don't have a 4000/90 but I *really* would buy them even with Alpha coming
- out soon. In fact, I just sent a recommendation to the people who write
- the checks that we purchase 3 90s in December of this year. As for the
- why, the answer is simple: The maturity of VMS on VAXes. With very few
- exceptions, I don't install version 1.0 of *anything*, hardware or
- software. I'm sure DEC engineering is doing a thorough job on VMS for
- Alpha, but I don't want to rely on it for our production environment for a
- while. The 90s should carry us 'til December '93 with no problem. Then
- we'll look into replacing the VAXes with Alphas.
-
- If we were running standalone VMS machines now, I would probably wait for
- Alphas, but we're running a homogenous local area VAXcluster. The number
- of things that can go wrong mixing the RISC/VMS and VAX/VMS even if it is
- supported are enormous. Now if we had the funds to replace all our
- workstations at one time with Alphas... :-}
