  14. Awhile ago, I posted a semi-flame about DEC having gotten into the business of
  15. phasing out one product, only to bring along a replacement product, and then
  16. charging the customer for migrating to the replacement product.  Remember that
  17. one?

  19. Well...a few other people some things to say, and I did promise a summary, so
  20. here it is:

  22.    VAX Performance Advisor -> DECperformance Solution (DECps)
  23.       
  24.       One replier stated that according to the trade rags, you "should" be 
  25.       able to get the same features you currently have with VPA with DECps 
  26.       for no fee.
  27.       
  28.       Another replier stated that the upgrade will be at no charge, but that
  29.       to keep the maintenance charges the same as VPA, they expected to "drop
  30.       back to Data Collector on most nodes."
  31.       
  32.       Some other pertinent information:
  33.       
  34.       The DECps Data Collector (PSDC), Performance Analyzer (PSPA) and
  35.       Capacity Planner (PSCP) are seperately installable and seperately
  36.       licensed products.
  37.       
  38.       DECps V1.0 (PSDC, PSPA and PSCP) will run with your existing VPA licenses.

  41.    Phase I -> Phase II Shadowing
  42.       
  43.       One replier states "there isn't a fee for this [conversion] at all."

  45.       Another replier states "We have been contemplating adoption of Volume 
  46.       Shadowing for some years time.  Now the -AB licence has been dropped and 
  47.       the price has skyrocketed I doubt we'll ever do it."

  49.       Some other pertinent information:

  51.       With Phase I shadowing, shadow *sets* are served, and you only need to
  52.       license the serving nodes.
  53.       
  54.       With Phase II shadowing, shadow *members* are served, so every node that
  55.       mounts shadow sets needs to be licensed.  "No license, no mount."

  58.    Data Centre Monitor -> ?
  59.       
  60.       One replier is waiting to see what happens to DCM too.
  61.       Other than that, I didn't get anything on DCM.

  68.       One replier states that "Motif had a period in which you could get a 
  69.       free license for existing DECwindows machines."

  71.       I can personally vouch for this.  Luckily we got our license request
  72.       in before the deadline.  If you didn't get yours in already, it is
  73.       too late... :-(

  78.       DECps V1.0 does not have much, if any, SPM functionality in it yet.
  79.       I hear that future revs will include SPM-like functionality.  Not 
  80.       being an SPM guru, all I can say is that DECps looks a lot like VPA with 
  81.       an improved DECwindows interface and a slightly different command line
  82.       interface.

  84.       DECps V1.0 will also run with your existing SPM license.

  89.       Since we don't use either of these, I cannot comment.

  99.    One replier was of the opinion "that DEC ought to give away VPA/DECps for 
  100.    free - it would sell CPUs, memory and other things and more than make up 
  101.    for the cost of development in hardware sales alone.  And management 
  102.    products like TSM (and ALL server download files should be packaged in one 
  103.    kit that includes TSM).  Also something like LTM which disables the bridge 
  104.    functions of a bridge ought to come 'free' with a DEC bridge."

  106.    Another replier stated that "We've had no trouble at all over such things.
  107.    Tell your rep. to read his _Sales Update_s a little more thoroughly.  
  108.    Or hop onto the Electronic Connection and read all about it for yourself
