  24. Mostly true.  Mostly not fine.  We have a pair of 4000/200s, each with a
  25. TSV05 9-track drive and a M7530-PA controller.  I don't know if this is 
  26. DSSI or SCSI.  I haven't had multivolume problems, but I've had plenty of 
  27. others.  DEC says that BACKUP is expecting more of the retry and error 
  28. handling to be done at the controller level, as controllers get more 
  29. sophisticated.  So it makes sense that COPY works better than BACKUP.
  30. Our problems are that errors can
  31. make the drive go offline, leading to mount verification and abort.
  32. Sometimes the controller is left in a mode that will cause it to erase
  33. the label on the next tapes mounted, BEFORE the label is read,
  34. without operator verification.  Other cases lead to a LEF hang, in which
  35. the BACKUP is waiting forever.

  37. We are working with DEC on the problem.  They would prefer that we use
  38. the TK70 for backup.  We would prefer to use 9-track, having an
  39. abundant supply of media.  Don't try our configuration.  (Maybe the
  40. SCSI controller makes a difference.)
