- That actually happened to me a year or two back. I logged on to a bulletin-
- board type of system (VMS), over the network, to browse around in some data.
- This was a public account chained to a menu program. Well, the menu program
- broke and dumped me into the arms of DCL and the $ prompt. Oops! Fortunately,
- the sysop had included his E-mail address in the login welcome message, a few
- lines under the advisory
-
- THIS IS A U.S. GOVERNMENT COMPUTER
- ANY UNAUTHORIZED ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THIS SYSTEM IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE
-
- I simply wrote an E-mail message to the sysop explaining what happened, signed
- it with my real name and real E-mail address, and logged off. The sysop fixed
- the problem, I went back to using his bulletin board system, and we lived
- happily ever after.
-
- Obviously, I and everyone else on the planet are authorized to use that BBS
- account for its intended purpose, and it ain't our fault if the menu program
- breaks. Failure to report such a problem to the sysop creates the risk that
- some idiot will come along and exploit the bug, do mischief, and force the
- sysop to shut down the board altogether -- bad news if it's one of your
- favorite boards.
