- Well, this monday I couldnt wait any longer (since july31 was coming
- fast) and I called 1-800-3-IBMOS2 and got my windows upgrade. I was
- impressed, the person made sure I had the proper hardware before doing
- anything else. It arrived Wednesday morning (wow) and I started
- installing. No hitches. So i've been reading all the online docs and
- the stuff on diskcache and ifs. I have 16 meg ram and I dont have a
- good feeling for how much cache I should have. I think the default for
- IFS is 512k, and for FAT partitions 64k (the line in config.sys says
- diskcache 64k,LW, or something like that). My experience with DOS
- caching is that larger sizes in both cases would improve compilation
- speeds, etc. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to make the
- most of my memory. I'm running on a 3mhz 386 with a maxtor 120 meg ide
- drive. I've found almost everything to be responsive - starting up
- and shutting down go pretty quick, and when I click help things pop
- up pretty fast. I am thoroughly impressed, i really hope OS/2 catches
- on in a big way. No DOS extender (ie windoze) will ever be able to be
- this good.
