- huh, so one MUST have a cd rom to use this? I'm sure one would *want* one
- to have any fun :), but I was hoping that a midi/digital audio board and
- OS/2 would be enough to start using MMPM/2......

-
- ah yes, 'internal synthesizer support of midi data'. Not a good sign.
- Roland MPU-401 midi hardware has been the 'standard' for years even though
- the Creative Labs/Media Vision and apparently IBM people don't support it.
- Now we have people inventing another midi 'standard'. Sigh. Oh well,
- somebody has to address the hardware timing problems with midi hardware under
- OS/2. Apparently, the 'smart mode' of the Roland standard is unsuitable for
- really sensitive, accurate timing, therefore the timing has to come from
- 'outside' the actual midi card, but I really don't know enough about it. I
- do know that current MPU-401 midi hardware and current IBM midi software under
- OS/2 does not work well enough for a professional environment. I have only
- tested Twelve Tone's Cakewalk Pro 4.0E with a Music Quest MQX-32M midi card
- however. (The Music Quest card is register level MPU-401 compatible and takes
- the Roland design further by incorporating true SMPTE read/write capability).
- Which brings up the point that I don't see SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and
- Television) synchronization mentioned. This is another long established
- standard in daily use in all levels of professional film/television and audio
- work. Sigh. I would like to know if Twelve Tone's new Cakewalk for Windows
- will run under OS/2 with the MS multimedia extensions. This software under
- Windows 3.1 with a midi card and digital audio board is fantastic by the way.
- One can imbed 44.1khz 16 bit stereo audio data in a midi sequence. Good show
- Twelve Tone. I keep reading how there aren't any 3.1 specific applications.
- What then is Cakewalk for Windows? It certainly will not run under Windows
- 3.0 (perhaps it would run under 3.0 with the 1.0 multimedia extensions, I
- don't know).
-
- I am looking forward to getting MMPM/2 (when Media Vision
- comes out with their announced MMPM/2 drivers for the PAS-16 anyway.)
- Somebody please tell me I don't actually HAVE TO HAVE a cd rom though!
