- Hello!
-
- I posted a couple of days ago about some strange problems with OS/2:
- Icons stayed grayed when they shouldn't have, and the Shutdown function
- didn't work. Thanks to those who posted suggestions! The problems have
- been fixed!
-
- Chkdsk didn't help - apparantly there wa nothing wrong with the file system.
- What did the trick was going through the procedure to rebuild the WPS
- desktop. It seems that all these problems were the result of the
- initialization files being corrupted. Once thy were restored, everything
- started working again.
-
- Of course, I had to spend a couple of hours changing the settings of
- my apps, recreating the icons for some DOS apps, and making replacement
- shadows. Also, the recovery procedure fiddles with the CONFIG.SYS, so
- that had to be worked on too.
-
- What I've learned from this is the value of programs like WPSBackup.
- I have decided to run it occasionally to keep an updated replacement version
- of my initialization files handy. If the strange problems return, I will
- try their recovery procedure. If that gets me going again, I'll register
- WPSBackup and consider it money well spent.
-
- I hope this turns out to be useful to some of you who have strange problems
- that Chkdsk can't fix.
-
- Chris
