- While putting together my new system on paper (486/33 tentatively) I had
- decided on IDE for my hard drive interface. That was until I installed
- OS/2 on my DECpc 433 with 300 meg SCSI drive at work. I can say that
- this machine has one heckuva fast hard drive/interface. When running
- under DOS it seemed to be a dog, but the SCSI drivers for OS/2 must be
- fast -- real fast. Plus, it installed quickly and easily. No further
- configuration was required on my part.
-
- So, now I have to wonder: is IDE or SCSI the better way to go? SCSI,
- of course opens up possibilities of CD-ROM, tape backup, etc. without the
- purchase of an additional interface. But, for a clone, are SCSI systems
- as easy to setup and run with as the DEC machine I use at work (which I
- am clueless as to the interface manufacturer). IDE, on the other hand
- is cheaper and nearly as fast(?).
-
- Anecdotal evidence is more than welcome here. How does *your* {SCSI|IDE}
- system perform and what would you do {differently|the same} if you were
- buying today.
