- I recently purchased a Gateway 408/50 with an ATI Graphics Ultra adapter
- and had the same problem with my DOS programs (I'm not an OS/2 person).
- Here's the fix that worked for me...
-
- The ATI Graphics Ultra, as shipped on my Gateway with 15" CrystalScan
- monitor, was apparantly set up to use a 72Hz refresh rate at 800x600
- resolution. The ATI side of that adapter >>won't go into 800x600x256
- mode<< at a refresh rate above 70Hz (a fact noted as a comment in the
- "real" ATI manuals a friend of mine had, but not in the manuals supplied
- with my PC by Gateway - $%^&!@#!). The 8514/A side of that adapter
- apparantly does support that mode, which was why Windows 3.1 ran just
- fine in 800x600x256 (the Windows drivers apparantly use the 8514/A side
- of the adapter and ATI's proprietary 800x600x256 extension to the 8514/A
- side of that adapter). VPIC and my own Fractint program try to use
- the ATI side of that adapter at 800x600x256 mode, and fail.
-
- The solution (for me, at any rate) was to fire up the INSTALL program
- (from "real DOS", if you're using OS/2), select the "Start Up" (first)
- option, then select "Monitor Type", select the "Custom" entry (at the
- very end of the monitor list), select 800x600 resolution, then select
- the 70hz refresh rate. Bingo - 800x600x256 mode works fine.
