- Having now fallen into the void where I have had to use the ALT-F1 procedure
- to recovery my machine's config.sys file [that I made a typing error in and
- rendered my machine not bootable - be careful with the LIBPATH= statement...]
- that is installed in a OS/2 HPFS logical partition (not accessible from DOS)
- I am curious if anyone has determined a method to recover the OS2.INI files
- and the Desktop that you originally had before doing ALT-F1.
-
- I can't use the original installation diskette method since my machine
- will not boot OS/2 from the installation diskettes any longer; I have
- altered something in my hardware setup that renders OS/2 not bootable from
- the installation diskettes; I need to remove things to determine what. Note
- that installed OS/2 worked fine with my current hardware setup; be warned that
- you should test that the OS/2 installation procedure still works with your
- machine after you add new hardware as well as the installed version.
-
- ALT-F1 is the procedure where you press ALT-F1 during the boot sequence;
- OS/2 ignores the CONFIG.SYS file on your installed drive, copies CONFIG.SYS,
- OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI to CONFIG.00n, OS2.00n, and OS2SYS.00n (as documented)
- and moves the "OS2! 2.0 Desktop" directory to "OS2! 2n.0 Desktop" (not
- documented as far as I can see), then restores the CONFIG.SYS, OS2.INI, etc
- from the OS2\INSTALL directory [the original desktop configuration]. The
- system then boots to an original desktop
-
- Given that OS2 has made a copy for you of your original .INI files, one
- would think you could recover to your original desktop by restoring the
- .INI files. If it were so easy ...
-
- I have tried the following (without success):
- 1) alter the CONFIG.SYS file to point the USER_INI= and SYSTEM_INI= vars
- to point to OS2.001 and OS2SYS.001 respectively.
- RESULT: Gray screen without cursor or icons. DO ALT-F1 again (and get
- OS2.002, OS2SYS.002, etc.)
- 2) Do 1 above, and move "OS2! 2.0 Desktop" to "OS2OLDDESK" and then move
- "OS2! 21.0 Desktop" to "OS2! 2.0 Desktop".
- RESULT: Gray screen without cursor or icons. sigh.
-
- OS/2 Support indicated they were currently unaware of any method to recover
- the Desktop once you have taken the ALT-F1 route.
-
- Anyone else have any other suggestions?
