- Assuming the modem is okay. Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that you don't have
- an IRQ conflict. Speaking from experience - I got bit 2 days ago when
- I installed a card with the 16550 on COM2 (the card allowed 2|4 for the
- 16550 and 1|3 for the 16450). Previously I had been doing all my downloads
- from COM1 on the multi I/O card. Naturally, I forgot about the LAN card
- using the IRQ that I put COM2 on. It was easy to forget because I haven't
- been using the LAN lately (it was primarily used for arpa services to a
- now nonexistent U**X machine).

- Anyway, to make a long story short, I fixed the IRQ conflict and the
- problems went away.
