- Well, okay, maybe that's a little overstated, but it is definitely causing my
- SVGA card to put out modes my monitor can't handle.
-
- The situation: I have a Relisys 1520 monitor, it can handle a 60 Hz
- vertical refresh rate at 1024x768 (50 KHz max horizontal scan
- frequency). My old card was a Diamond Speedstar VGA (not a Plus), thus
- it's fastest mode was 60 Hz. I just plugged in a new Speedstar 24; it
- can do 72 Hz, but my monitor can't. (Both cards are ET-4000 based and
- I'm using the 1024x768x256 driver - which will only do 60 Hz - from
- orch09.zoo.) When I do a "SVGA ON" it seems to put my card in 72 Hz
- mode, no matter what else I do. I did the "open a DOS full-screen, run
- the card's vmode program to set the different video parameters, then
- run SVGA ON" thing, but the svgadata.pmi file is a lot different than
- the one generated for my old card, even though I told the new card to
- run the exact same modes. (Before someone suggests using my old .pmi
- file, I'm using it right now, but this is clearly stupid.)
-
- Another nit is that I've NEVER been able to properly use OS/2
- fullscreens, even with my old card. Yes, I've read the README, the
- FAQ, the Tips'n'Techniques, installed the May 15 vsvga stuff, and done
- everything else under the sun that I could find at ftp-os2 and the IBM
- ftp site, but nothing will make the OS/2 fullscreen work. I had some
- success with the old card if I put it in 132x25 mode (why doesn't the
- pmi file have a listing for 80x25 ???), but with the new card, even
- this gets thrashed thoroughly.
-
- Summary:
-
- what used to work: everything but OS/2 fullscreens - it came up in a
- weird video mode, but at least my monitor could sync to it
-
- what works now with old pmi file: everything but OS/2 fullscreens -
- it now comes up in a mode I can't sync to
-
- what works now with new pmi file: only DOS fullscreens - everything
- else is a completely unsynchronizable mess.
-
- If anyone has any insight into this before my monitor tube implodes
- all over my room, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.
